The August Garden

With the cooler temperatures slowly creeping in and the recent rains adding the soil moisture we missed in the early part of the summer the gardens are Maymont are rebounding magnificently.  We are spending much of our time pulling weeds, just like everyone else.  We are then adding fresh mulch to cover bare soil or thinly mulched areas.  Mulching will retain the soil moisture, it will also smoother the winter weed seedlings that are germinating right now.

The roses in the Italian Garden are in full bloom.  Come to Maymont’s Hampton Street entrance for convenient access to the gardens.  Take some time to walk and enjoy the gardens in their summer splendor.  Directions to Maymont’s various entrances can be found on the website at www.maymont.org along with information on upcoming programs and events.  Submitted by Peggy Singlemann, Director of Horticulture
