Back to School in the Garden

Back to School sales and school buses rolling through the neighborhood means the fall garden is coming into its own.  In addition to the Lespedeza ‘Gibralter’ previously mentioned in this blog there are wonderful perennials that shine this time of year.  Sweet Autumn Clematis, Clematis terniflora, has finally unveiled its sweetly fragrant white clusters of blossoms.  Allow it to ramble over a rose bush that is no longer in bloomto enjoy the fountain of flowers.  Japanese Anemones, Anemone japonica, has soft hues of flowers dancing in the wind with Helianthus angustifolius.  Pretty soon the chrysanthemums will start to open and the garden will be achieving its grand finale.

This is the  perfect time to enjoy the cool evenings of early autumn with a late day walk through Maymont.  The landscape changes weekly as the colors of fall begin to descend at the same time the fall blooming plants reach their peak.   Pack a picnic dinner, the gates close at 7pm.
