Maymont’s Garden Blog features information about the gardens at Maymont, contributed by our horticulture volunteers and staff.

Maymont Details Every Gardener Wants to Know:
Location: Richmond, Virginia
Zone: 7
Soil: Virginia Clay/acidic

In 1886, James and Sallie May Dooley acquired a former dairy farm on the James River and transformed the 100-acre tract into a showplace of the type then in vogue among American millionaires. The estate was bequeathed to the City of Richmond in 1925. Today, Maymont is appreciated as an unusually complete example of an American country place of the Gilded Age, a distinctive estate on the grand scale for which magnificent landscaping was an essential part.

The Dooleys’ original Japanese and Italian Gardens as well as an exceptional Arboretum are enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year, and over time, other gardens, including an Herb Garden, Marie’s Butterfly Trail and the Daylily Garden have been added.

I would really like to write a guest post piece for Maymont’s Garden blog. With whom would I need to speak to about that?
